Sony PlayStation 4

Specifications:
8-core, x86 AMD ‘Jaguar’ processor | AMD Radeon Graphics Core Next engine w/1152 shaders | 8GB GDDR5 | Blu-ray/DVD | 500GB hard drive | 3xUSB 3.0 ports | Ethernet, Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) | Bluetooth 2.1 | HDMI output (4K support), optical output | PS4 Dual Shock Controller (included), PS4 camera and PS Move (not included)

The new PS4 promises some serious hardware. It moves away from the PS3’s proprietary Cell processor – and instead, features a simpler AMD chip. But this is only to attract more developers.

Like the Xbox, the PS4 now gets its own motion-sensing camera. Besides, this accessory features a four-channel microphone array that could also be used for voice commands.

But while the Xbox One veers towards entertainment, the PS4 tends towards social gameplay: press the ‘Share’ button on its DualShock4 controller to share your game videos and screen grabs.

Its PlayStation app lets you chat with friends, watch their videos and give them gaming tips. The system will learn your likes and dislikes, preloading content from your favourite game genres or by your favourite creators. But best of all, the PS4 will allow you to share your disc-based games with friends for them to try at home for as long as they want.

Of course, you will also have access to a variety of cloud-based services from the PlayStation Store including music and video subscription services, as well as freeto-play content. And you’ll even be able to browse andstream games to your consoles to try them almost instantaneously.
On the downside, you’ll have to pay extra for the PS4 Camera that will be released as a separate add-on.

Games franchises: Assassin’s Creed, Battlefield, Call of Duty, FIFA, Just Dance, Killzone, Need for Speed, DC Universe

Times of India’s take: We’re always impressed with PlayStation’s cutting-edge hardware; and we love the whole social aspect of gaming (even letting us share the games we’ve bought). Again, we’re sceptical about voice control and the ready availablity of music and video content; and we would have preferred it if they’d have bundled the PS4 Camera in the box pack.

Estimated India launch: Early 2014 Price: $399 (25,700)
