Bank Debit and Credit Contactless Cards

State Bank of India (SBI), India’s largest bank, has introduced contactless card payments technology that allows payments by waving or tapping of the cards near the machines.

The bank, and its credit card subsidiary – SBI Card – have launched the sbiINTOUCH Contactless Debit Card and SBI Signature Contactless Credit Card for quick, secure and hassle-free payments at merchant outlets. Contactless cards use the near-field communication (NFC) technology, enabling users to make payments by waving or tapping the card near the contactless reader instead of swiping or dipping it.

In a move that could boost the acceptance of SBI’s tap and pay cards at select point-of-sale (POS) machines., the RBI, in a notification, has said that banks can now enable transactions in contactless cards for values up to R2,000 without the requiring a separate PIN authentication. For amounts higher than that, the customer must be given the option of contact payment and would require pin authentication.
Contactless cards are designed to replace the use of cash in busy retail environments such as supermarkets, convenience stores, petrol stations and quick-service restaurants.

Security:
During a contactless transaction the card never leaves your hand; significantly reducing the risk of card loss and fraud due to counterfeit (skimming). Even if the card is waved multiple times at the reader, the unique security key feature of Visa payWave will ensure that only one transaction goes through, thus making it more secure.
