Acidity





What is ACIDITY?


The stomach normally secretes acid that is essential in the digestive process. This acid helps in breaking down the food during digestion. When there is excess production of acid by the gastric glands of the stomach, it results in the condition known as acidity. Dyspepsia, heartburn and the formation of ulcers are some of the symptoms. It is more common in highly emotional and nervous individuals.

Common Causes of Acidity


 


-          Consumption of Alcohol

-          Highly spicy foodstuffs

-          Non-vegetarian diets

-          Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID's)


Most acidity problems occur



-          After meals

-          When lifting weight or straining and applying pressure in the intra-abdominal area.

-          At night when lying down.





Home Remedies for Acidity


 


-          Skip the aerated drinks as well as the caffeine. Opt for herbal tea instead.

-          Have a glass of lukewarm water everyday.

-          Include banana, watermelon and cucumber in your daily diet. Watermelon juice is great for curing acidity.

-          Nariyal paani (Green Coconut water) is known to soothe the system if you suffer from acidity.

-          Drink a glass of milk - everyday.

-          Have your last meal at least two to three hours before you hit the sack.

-          Keeping long intervals between meals is another cause for acidity. Have small but regular meals.

-          Try to avoid pickles, spicy chutneys, vinegar, etc.

-          Boil some mint leaves in water and have a glass of this after meals.
Sucking on a piece of clove is another effective remedy.

-          Jaggery, lemon, banana, almonds and yogurt are all known to give you instant relief from acidity.

-          Excessive smoking and drinking will increase acidity, so cut down.

-          Try chewing gum. The saliva generated helps move food through the esophagus, easing symptoms of heartburn.

-          Ginger aids in digestion. Either buy powdered ginger in capsule forms or add the herb to your recipes.

-          A simple preparation of lemon water with sugar can be sipped on an hour before lunch to reduce uneasiness.

-          Have vegetables like drumsticks, beans, pumpkin, cabbage, carrot and spring onions.

-          After all three meals, take a small piece of jaggery and keep it in your mouth and suck.

-          Boil one cup of water. To this add 1 tsp of Aniseed (Saunf). Cover and leave overnight. Strain the water in the morning, add 1 tsp of honey. When this is taken 3 times a day it prevents acidity.

-          To 1 ½ liters of water add 1 tsp Caraway seeds (shah jeera). Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes. Sip while warm. Have the concoction 2-3 times a day for 5-6 days.

-          Powder one clove and one cardamom; use the powder as a mouth freshener after every meal. No more acidity and no more bad breath.





Ayurveda Treatment for Acidity



Some of the ayurvedic treatments for acidity can be used for biding farewell to the problem forever.



-          Chewing tulsi leaves can give a big relief from acidity by calming down the burning sensation and gas.

-          Keep jaggery or gurr in your mouth and slowly suck it till the time acidity caves in.

-          Eat banana, cucumber and water melon on an hourly basis.

-          You can also go for coriander seeds and aniseed or sauf to get instant relief from acidity.

-          Drink lemon juice with addition of equal amounts of salt and sugar.

-          Coconut water is one of the natural remedies of acidity if consumed 4 to 5 times a day.

-          Chewing harad (terminilian chebula) after every meal is one of the popular ayurvedic remedies for acidity.

-          Raw garlic is the arch enemy of acidity. let it do the job for you!

-          Mix 1 table of chebulic myroblan with one tablespoon of amla juice and drink it daily.

-          Maintain an upright position for some time after meals.

-          Mix 2 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 2 tablespoon of honey in a glass of water and drink it before meals.

-          Mint juice is another contender in ayurveda treatment for acidity cures.

-          Reduce your diet to 3/4th of your regular diet.

-          Exercising is highly recommended. So after every meal, walk, twist and twirl!

-          Whenever you feel heartburn or acidic, eat some almonds.

-          Make sure that your diet is a combination of all tastes instead of focus on just one taste.

-          Drink cold milk to receive instant relief from heartburn and acidity.

-          Food rich in fibre such as fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, pulses and seeds must be consumed. They help in digestion.

-          Acidic food such as pickles, vinegar, tamarinds and curds should be avoided during an acidity attack.


Besides following all the above mentioned ayurevda tips for acidity, you can bring about certain changes in your eating habits and lifestyle.



-          Fatty and oil food rich in acidic contents should be avoided while your ayurveda for acidity schedule is in process.

-          Avoid drinking water immediately after eating.

-          Lessen the intake of tea and coffee and avoid smoking.

-          An elevated sleeping posture is really beneficial. By elevated we mean that your head and shoulders should be comforted on a high pillow.
