[In India] If you are going to buy a refrigerator or air conditioner, look for the following symbol. It is also common nowadays in the advertisement itself. The more stars a product has, the more energy it will save.

As quoted by Director General, Bureau of Energy Efficiency:
"The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) website, is all set to be a comprehensive information-base on energy conservation (EC) related developments and issues. It will provide an update on the related policy framework especially in the context of EC Act 2001 beside topical write - ups, news and highlights on happenings in India. The site will also capture the activities taken up by the BEE with the stakeholders co-opting expertise from bilateral/multilateral agencies.
The mission of BEE is to institutionalize energy efficiency services, enable delivery mechanisms in the country and provide leadership to the key players involved in the energy conservation movement. The primary goal of the Bureau is to reduce the energy intensity in the economy."

Here is an advertisement from Ministry of Power, Government of India, and its a good news.

It draws attention of manufacturers as under –

“With effect from 07.01.2010, Sale of Frost Free Refrigerator, Air Conditioner, Tubular Fluorescent Lamp and Distribution Transformer will not be permissible without BEE Label. Minimum 1 Star Rating will be mandatory to sell the product”


BEE labeling is still in the voluntary phase for Direct Cool Refrigerators, Electric Motors & Pumps, Colour Televisions, LPG Stoves, Electric geysers and Ceiling Fans.
